Vice Presidents of the United States

This list of U.S. vice presidents in order shows the dates each took office and the president that they served with. The vice president is elected for a four year term in office, with the date for each term beginning and ending on January 20 of the year following an election, with dates of March 4 for inaugurations prior to the 20th amendment. There have been several periods of time where there was no vice president, due to death or resignation of either the president or vice president. Prior to the 25th Amendment there was no Constitutional provision for filling a vice presidential vacancy and the office would remain unoccupied until the next election.
