Teaching About Presidential Inaugurations

The Presidential Inauguration of the United States is a ceremony that occurs every four years at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, DC when the President-elect and Vice President-elect are sworn in and take office. The ceremony takes place on January 20, just two months after the November presidential election. Some of the most memorable inaugurations include Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first inaugural, John F. Kennedy’s first inaugural, and Barack Obama’s first inaugural. Teaching about presidential inaugurations is important because it provides students with the opportunity to learn more about how the U.S. government works and the historical significance of the inauguration.
