April 8, 2024. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth at a close enough distance to completely block the Sun’s light, creating darkness during the day. Parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are in the path of totality—meaning that the Moon will completely block the Sun. Other places will experience a partial eclipse.
